A research assistant, not an oracle

AI is genuinely useful for research because it is fast, patient, and happy to approach a question from ten different angles without tiring. It can gather threads, explain unfamiliar ideas, and help you see the shape of a topic quickly.

What it is not is a source of guaranteed truth. It is better to think of it as an eager assistant who has read an enormous amount but sometimes misremembers, and never says “I’m not sure.” Used that way, with your own judgement kept firmly in charge, it becomes a real asset.

Brainstorming and exploring

The first thing AI is brilliant at is opening a topic up. When you are staring at a blank page, it can hand you a spread of ideas to react to, which is far easier than generating them from nothing.

and note which ones are cheapest to try first.

Summarising and digesting

The second strength is condensing. When you have more to read than time to read it, AI can turn a long report or a dense article into something you can grasp in a minute.

The habit that makes or breaks it

Here is the part that matters most. AI can state something completely made up with total confidence, presenting an invented fact, statistic, or quote as though it were solid. This slip is known as a hallucination, and research is exactly where it does the most damage.

The danger is sharpest with anything specific: figures, dates, names, and above all citations. AI can produce a reference that looks perfect, complete with author, title, and year, for a source that does not exist. Never cite something an AI gave you without finding and checking the original yourself.

The fix is not to avoid AI, it is to treat every factual claim as a lead to verify rather than a fact to trust. Let it point you toward answers, then confirm the important ones against a source you can see.

When AI can check its own sources

Some tools reduce this risk by looking things up before they answer and showing you where each point came from. This approach, where the AI searches a real collection of documents and grounds its reply in what it finds, is called retrieval-augmented-generation, or RAG.

It is a real improvement, because you can follow the links and judge the sources yourself. Even so, the habit stays the same: open the source, read it, and make sure it says what the AI claims it says.

Try it yourself

Pick a topic you are curious about and ask the AI to explain it and point you toward specifics. Then verify one claim it makes.

Explain the basics of how compost breaks down, and mention two or three
specific facts or figures I could look up to confirm.

Take one of those facts and check it against a source you trust. That small act, trusting nothing until you have seen it, is the whole discipline of researching well with AI.

A common misstep

A common instinct is to let a confident, well-written answer stand in for a checked one, because it sounds authoritative. Fluent phrasing is not evidence. The more sure an answer sounds, the more it is worth confirming before you rely on it.
