What are Claude and Gemini?

Both are AI assistants you type to and they type back, which makes each one a chatbot. Underneath, each is powered by a large language model, the kind of AI that has learned to work with language by reading enormous amounts of text.

Claude is made by a company called Anthropic. Gemini is made by Google. They do many of the same things, so for everyday questions you will get a helpful answer from either.

Where does Claude stand out?

Claude’s biggest reputation is for writing that sounds like a person wrote it. Many people find its drafts less stiff and its suggestions more thoughtful, which makes it a comfortable partner for letters, reports, and anything you will put your name to.

It is also well regarded for working carefully through long material. You can paste in a lengthy report, a policy document, or a set of notes and ask questions about it, and Claude tends to keep track of the detail without losing the thread. Its tone is usually measured, which some people prefer for sensitive topics.

Where does Gemini stand out?

Gemini’s biggest advantage is where it lives. It sits inside Google products that many people already use every day, such as Gmail, Google Docs, Search, and Android phones. You can ask for help with an email or a document right where you are working, without copying anything into a separate website.

It is also comfortable working with more than words. AI that can handle text, pictures, and other kinds of content in one conversation is called multimodal, and Gemini was designed that way from the start. It can create images from a description as well as understand the ones you share.

Which should you choose?

It depends on what you want to do and where you already spend your time. Here is how we would think about it.

For writing and editing

Many people lean towards Claude here, for its natural tone. Gemini writes well too, and has the bonus of working inside Google Docs and Gmail, so if you draft there all day, that convenience may matter more.

For reading and summarising long documents

Claude has a particular reputation for handling long pasted text carefully. Both can summarise, but this is where Claude is most often recommended.

For working inside Google’s apps

Gemini, clearly. Having AI in the same place as your email and files saves a lot of switching back and forth.

For working inside Microsoft’s apps

Gemini, as Claude does not create images. Claude can describe and discuss pictures you share, and draw simple charts or diagrams, but not photos or illustrations.

For research and up-to-date questions

Try it yourself

The fairest test is to give both tools the very same task and read the answers side by side. Find a long piece of text you already know well, such as a long article, a public report, or the instructions for something you own. Avoid anything private.
