Agentic AI

Agentic AI describes systems that act with a degree of independence to complete a task you have set. The difference from an ordinary chatbot is one of scope. A chatbot responds to each message; an agentic system takes a larger goal, breaks it into steps, and works through them, deciding what to do next as it goes.

A helpful way to picture it is the difference between asking a colleague a question and handing them a project. If you ask, “What is the capital of France?” you want a single answer. If you say, “Book me a meeting room, invite the team, and send round the agenda,” you are describing a small chain of actions. Agentic AI aims at the second kind of request, often by connecting to other tools such as your calendar, email, or the web.

This capability is genuinely powerful and still maturing. Because these systems take actions rather than only offering words, mistakes can carry further, which is why sensible ones are built with guardrails and often pause to check with you before doing anything significant.

You will hear “agentic” used a great deal at the moment, sometimes more as marketing than description. It is worth reading such claims carefully and looking at what a tool actually does. The useful question is always whether it genuinely plans and acts, or only answers you in a slightly livelier way.
