AI Assistant

An AI tool built to help you get things done through conversation: answering questions, drafting text, explaining ideas, and helping with tasks. It is the friendly, general-purpose face of AI that most people meet first. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are all AI assistants.

An AI assistant is a tool designed to help you across a wide range of everyday tasks by chatting with you. You describe what you need in plain language, and it responds with an answer, a draft, an explanation, or a suggestion. The best-known examples, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, are all powered by large language models.

It is worth teasing apart a few closely related words, because they overlap. A chatbot is any program you talk to, including narrow ones that only handle, say, customer support for one company. An AI assistant is broader and more capable, meant to help with all sorts of things. An AI agent goes a step further and can take actions to complete tasks, not only converse. The lines between these are blurry, and marketing tends to blur them further.

For a beginner, the encouraging point is that an assistant is a genuinely forgiving place to start. There is no special command language to learn. You ask in ordinary words, see what comes back, and refine from there. Getting good results is a skill, but the door to walk through is a low one.

A gentle reminder applies, though. An assistant is helpful and confident, but it can still be wrong, so it pays to check anything important rather than taking every answer at face value.
