Temperature
A setting that controls how adventurous or predictable an AI's answers are. Turn it low and the AI plays it safe, giving steady, focused responses. Turn it up and it gets more varied and creative, but also less reliable. This creativity dial is called temperature.
Every time an AI writes, it is choosing what word comes next from a range of possibilities. Temperature decides how boldly it chooses. At a low temperature it tends to pick the safest, most likely option each time, which makes its answers consistent and to the point. At a high temperature it is willing to take more chances, which brings surprise and variety.
A kitchen comparison helps. A low temperature is like a cook who follows the recipe to the letter: reliable, and the same every time. A high temperature is like a cook who improvises and adds a pinch of this and a dash of that: more interesting, though the results vary and not every attempt lands.
Why does this matter to you? Because the best setting depends on the task. For something factual, like a summary or a definition, you want steadiness, so a lower temperature suits. For something playful, like brainstorming names or writing a story, a higher temperature can spark ideas you would not have reached otherwise.
Most everyday chat tools set the temperature for you, so you may never touch it directly. It shows up more often when using AI through an API or advanced settings. Even so, knowing it exists explains why a generative AI can feel both dependable and delightfully unpredictable, depending on how it has been tuned.
